Reading Material

I recently stumbled across a wonderful children's book. Not only does my four year old son seem to like it, but I enjoy reading it as well. The stories are entertaining but in a calm sort of way that seems to be perfect for bedtime. The stories are not too long and not too short. James Herriot uses words that an adult appreciates and is a perfect introduction for a four year old to more advanced language. There are stories about cats, dogs and horses and beautiful illustrations.

I appreciate Dr. Seuss and Richard Scarry...to the fullest degree, but I've been on the look out for some books that weren't quite so lively and a bit longer for easing into the night-time mode.
We're also enjoying some children's poetry anthologies and the Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel. I'm trying to think back to age appropriate chapter books that I can reread or even read for the first time. I'm really looking forward to reading some more of these great children's books!

Belgian Inspiration

When I opened this I took a deep breath and thought, ahhh, beautiful!

I live in a 1920 farmhouse. There are beautiful oak floors and oak trim around doors and windows that I wouldn't dream of painting. I also got a great deal on a dark wood dining room set that I couldn't pass up. It's extremely functional and will be perfect for raising two growing boys, but it's a little dark and clunky for my simple Scandinavian preferences. I've tried to figure out how to merge the simple beauty of Swedish Style with the realities of my home and living with golden retrievers and boys. The Belgian Style seems to do a great job merging the two. Although, I don't think I will be able to accomplish the full Belgian effect with my lifestyle, it gives me great inspiration.

A Four Year Old

Happy Birthday to my oldest son. He turned four on January 15. He is a sensitive, caring and tenderhearted young man. He has weathered the past year well, becoming a proud older brother.

He started preschool this year and is known to be a peacemaker among his peers.

Although he is particular at times I hope he grows up continuing to hone his eye for details.

I also hope he continues to care about the world around him and looks out for those less fortunate than him.

I'm proud of him and look forward to getting to know him more.
